Following the devastating flood that struck Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, many persons with disabilities have been left homeless and stranded without basic amenities. These individuals are currently residing in various internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the state, facing severe hardship.

Recently, the Cedar Foundation for Disability visited the Bakasi Camp in Maiduguri to assess the living conditions of persons with disabilities. During their visit, the Cedar team interviewed several individuals affected by the flood. One person with a disability shared a distressing account of being hit by someone’s elbow while trying to get food, highlighting the increased difficulties they face in securing necessities. Another person described how their home was engulfed by floodwaters, how their parents managed to get them to safety, and how they had gone without food for several days.

The Executive Director of the Cedar Foundation, Mr. Gata Moses, expressed deep concern about the dire conditions at the camp. He noted that the struggles of persons with disabilities, who were already facing significant challenges, have been exacerbated by the harsh realities of living in a camp where access to food and other essentials is severely limited.

Mr. Moses called upon compassionate members of society to contribute towards improving the living conditions for persons with disabilities in these camps. Your support can make a tangible difference in their lives.

Let’s not just talk about making an impact—let’s take action and be the change.
